Rosneft President and Chairman of the Management Board Igor Sechin and Vice President and head of the Eni Representative Office in Russia and CIS Ernesto Ferlenghi signed a Declaration on Protection of the Environment and Biodiversity for Oil and Gas Exploration and Development on the Russian Continental Shelf.
Considering the continuous improvement of technologies and operating procedures for exploration and development of Arctic mineral resources as their objective, Rosneft and Eni reiterated their commitment to ensure a sustained development of the Arctic region, including by minimizing the impact on indigenous population and climate.
The sides will cooperate in preservation of the biological diversity in the Arctic region, following the provisions set forth in the Convention on Biological Diversity and the biodiversity workshop of the global oil and gas industry group for environmental and social issues, International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association.
The partners agreed to conduct regular monitoring of the natural landscape and seas of the Arctic region, and strengthen international cooperation with due account of the Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy.
Rosneft and its partners will also discuss opportunities to establish a Coordination Center with the Russian space agency Roscosmos, the Russian Ministry of Transport and EMERCOM (Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters).
Notes for Editors Understanding that the Arctic environment consists of ecosystems with unique properties and resources, which require special protection, Rosneft came out with an initiative to adopt an Declaration on Arctic shelf Environmental Protection with its partners, and already signed the declaration with Statoil and ExxonMobil in late 2012. |
